Travel is a very common passion. When most people talk of travel though, they are speaking of visiting new cities and cultures. But you can get even more out of your travel experiences by travelling through time as well. No, a time travel machine hasn't been invented... but visiting some of the world's top museums is definitely the next best thing. From the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to the
British Museum in London, there's something for everyone. In no particular order, here are some top museums for a journey to the past:
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Cairo, Egypt
Travel back to ancient Egypt with a visit to this impressive museum. It's home to the world's most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, with an average of 120,000 items on display, with many more in store rooms. The Royal Mummy Room, one of the museum's most treasure attractions, has nine mummies on display including that of the famous Queen Hatshepsut. Also be sure to check out the 1,200 objects from the tomb of
King Tut, including the legendary solid gold death mask.
National Museum of Natural History - Washington D.C., USA
If you want to travel to a time before humans lived on Earth, this is the place to go. Children often refer to it as "the dinosaur museum", after the great hall of dinos - one of the museum's most popular exhibits. Throughout this grand space you'll find over 125 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites and human cultural artefacts. Be sure to visit the museum's outdoor butterfly garden, which has four different habitats and is open all year round (though the summer months are the best). The attractions here are endless but don't leave without getting a glimpse at the impressive Hope Diamond.
Musee du Louvre - Paris, France
For a grandeur experience to the past, the Louvre is the perfect place. You'll feel like royalty entering the magnificent Renaissance palace, however it's not only the exterior which amazes visitors, this museum is home to some of the world's most celebrated works of art. With over 35,000 pieces on display, you can definitely while away a day whilst learning about art through the ages. Some of the most famous pieces include Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Alejandro of Antioch's Venus de Milo.
The Metropolitan Museum of Arts - New York City, USA
A bit more on the modern side is the Met. It's bar far America's best collection of art, spanning several continents and eras. From ancient Egyptian art to some of the best modern art America has to offer and everything in between, it really is an art lover's paradise. This museum is home to paintings from everyone including Caravaggio to Constable and Monet to Matisse.
The British Museum - London, England
With over 13 million objects representing human history and culture, you can really get a good glimpse of how people lived in the past. Probably one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire world, the artefacts of the
British Museum document represent human history from the beginning of time to present. The collection contains amazing cultural relics from nearly every civilisation in the world - past and present. The Eglin Marbles from the Greek Parthenon and the Rosetta Stone are two of the top attractions. You could literally spend hours here in astonishment at the collection, but two of the best things about this museum are the spectacular design of the Grand Court and the fact that admission is free!
